Saint Who?
Saints Who Were Writers
Through his words and actions, Jesus Christ bestowed treasures of heavenly wisdom upon us during his time on earth. For example, he used parables to explain God’s eternal love for all people, and he demonstrated that same love by dying on the cross for us. However, Jesus did not compose and leave behind a book before he ascended into heaven. Instead, he chose to let his followers write down what they had seen and heard.
The Scriptural writings of the earliest disciples have a unique power: The word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword (Heb 4:12). The New Testament can pierce our hearts with contrition, fill our souls with joy, or even trouble our minds when we find it difficult to understand.
Fortunately, the Holy Spirit is always ready to grant Christians the spiritual gift of wisdom (1 Cor 12:8). And in every age, Christians have shared their own spiritual wisdom with others through their writing. The saints and blesseds featured this month wrote about topics as diverse as history, heresy, liturgy, law, and theology. They wrote in formats as varied as prose, poetry, pamphlets, and personal letters. Through their writings and example, we can learn to draw closer to God and share the wisdom we receive with others.
