Saint Who?
Saints Who Could Read Souls
Saint Roseline
Prioress († 1329) Feast: January 17
Roseline de Villeneuve was born to a noble family in the Provence region of France. She was educated by the Poor Clares and became known for her generosity. In her mid-twenties, she entered a Carthusian monastery. The story is told that while she was a novice she once became so wrapt in prayer that she forgot about the dinner she was to prepare for her companions. When they arrived, she begged forgiveness, and angels appeared to set the table and bring the meal.
After several years in religion, Roseline succeeded her aunt as the prioress of another Carthusian monastery. Her life was one of great asceticism. She was known to have great power against demons and the ability to read hearts and minds. Her chief advice was usually, “Know thyself.” Other miracles were attributed to her, including the deliverance of her brother who had been captured during the Crusades.
Roseline died in 1329 and was buried simply. It is said a strong scent of roses emanated from her grave and miracles began to occur. Five years later her body was discovered not only incorrupt but “indescribably beautiful.” The eyes were so bright they were placed in a separate reliquary—still visible today. Her cult was confirmed in 1851.
Loving Father, through the prayers of Saint Roseline, may we know ourselves the better to know you.
