Saints Who Achieved Sanctity Young
Saint Nunzio Sulprizio
Layman († 1836)Feast: May 5
Nunzio was born in Pescosansonesco, Italy. His parents died when he was six years old, and his grandmother died three years later. The young boy was placed in the care of an uncle, who was a blacksmith. Sadly, this uncle was a cruel, uncaring man who treated his nephew like a slave in his shop. For six years, Nunzio was underfed, forced to work long hours, and often beaten, yet the pious boy always responded with obedience and patience. Over time, this mistreatment severely damaged Nunzio’s health.
Fortunately, another uncle learned about Nunzio’s situation, took over his care, and placed Nunzio in a hospital. The teenager was cheerful, uncomplaining, and humbly grateful for the care he received. He frequently left his bed to encourage other patients and often spoke about his love for the Eucharist and the Blessed Mother.
Two years later, the uncle brought Nunzio into his home. Due to the generous care he received, his health began to improve. He received an education for the first time in many years and considered becoming a priest. But eventually his health problems returned. At the age of nineteen, with a smile on his face, Nunzio died. At his bedside, people noticed a sweet odor, and devotion to the young saint spread throughout Italy.
Merciful God, help us to forgive as you forgive.
