Saints Whose Bodies Resisted Corruption

Blessed Jane of Signa

Virgin († 1307)Feast: November 17

Jane (also Joan or Giovanna) was born near Florence in 1244. During her early years she was a shepherdess, and in her many quiet hours she cultivated a profound spirit of prayer. She also fostered devotion among her fellow shepherds. They would gather for prayer and instruction at a giant oak tree, known as “Jane’s tree.”

When her companions noticed that in a heavy rainstorm Jane and her sheep remained safe and dry, reverence for her increased. And many sought and received protection from storms by staying near her. As her popularity grew, however, she became unable to pray in peace. It is said she joined the Third Order Franciscans and became a hermit. For the next four decades she lived in prayer and penance.

Though enclosed in a cell, she remained compassionate and close to her fellow men. Tireless in offering comfort to those who came to her window, she was a powerful intercessor. Miracles were attributed to her intercession, including healing the blind and raising the dead. Her death, it is said, was announced by the miraculous ringing of the church bells. She died in 1307. Seven centuries later, her body can still be seen at the church of Saint John the Baptist in Signa; a special celebration is held in her honor during Easter week.

Almighty Father, through the prayers of Blessed Jane
of Signa, help me remain faithful to prayer.
