Saint Who?
Saints Whose Bodies Resisted Corruption
Saint Ubaldus
Bishop († 1160) Feast: May 16
Ubaldus was born in the late 11th century. The son of Italian nobles, he became a canon at the cathedral church of Gubbio. (Canons were priests specially attached to the cathedral.) When he was appointed prior of the cathedral community, Ubaldus traveled to Vienna to study the methods of Blessed Peter de Honestis, who had done much to increase regularity and fervor among canon priests. Ubaldus returned and led his community in holiness.
He was made bishop of Gubbio around 1128. Known for his mildness, he is said to have once told a construction foreman that his work was damaging church property. The irritable man pushed him into a tub of mortar. Ubaldus made no complaint, but when others brought the man to the courts, Ubaldus asked only for a gesture of peace from his aggressor and the dismissal of the case.
He died in 1160. When he was canonized in 1192, his body was disinterred and found to be intact and flexible. Continued examinations have taken place and the body remains largely undecayed, though aged. Ubaldus is specially invoked against diabolic attack. It was once said that in Umbria, at least one child in every family bore the name Ubaldus.
Almighty Father, through the prayers of Saint Ubaldus, help me to humbly accept personal insult.
