Blessed Thomas of Florence

Thomas Bellacci grew up in the city of Florence, Italy. Thomas’ father was a butcher, and he worked in the family business. Although his parents were good Catholics, Thomas lived a wild life as a teenager, and his companions were thieves and bullies. He became the sort of reckless, immoral young man other parents told their sons to avoid.
One day, a serious crime was committed in Florence, and everyone assumed Thomas was responsible. However, on this occasion, it wasn’t his fault. But his companions abandoned him, and Thomas realized he was facing a serious punishment for a crime he had not committed. Fortunately, a priest noticed the dejected young man walking through the streets, believed in his innocence, and helped Thomas clear his name.
Grateful and truly converted, Thomas turned back to God. He began to pray regularly, made acts of penance for his sins, and even sought to enter the Franciscan order. Initially, the friars rejected him because of his past reputation. But in time, Thomas was able to convince them of his devotion, and he became a religious brother. He became known as a spiritual director, novice master, preacher, miracle worker, and mystic during the rest of his long life.
