Saint Anthony of Padua
Priest and Doctor († 1231) Feast: June 13
Baptized as Ferdinand, he was born in Portugal, apparently into a noble family, and renounced his wealth to become an Augustinian canon regular. Although he enjoyed his theological studies and could have had a successful career as a scholar, he asked his superiors for permission to enter the newly founded Franciscan order. They grudgingly agreed, and he took the name Anthony. In his zeal, he hoped to preach the Gospel to the Muslims of Morocco and perhaps even die for Christ.
But in this, Anthony failed. He became so sick in north Africa that he was sent back to Italy. His next plan—to live as a hermit—was frustrated when his superiors discovered his extraordinary preaching abilities. Anthony was ordered to travel as a missionary priest throughout the countryside, and his preaching attracted huge crowds. Good Catholics became fervent Catholics, lapsed Catholics returned to the faith, and those who promoted heretical teachings were unable to refute his arguments. Although he sought a life of solitude, far away from others, miracles have occurred through Anthony’s prayers ever since. Today, he is a well-known intercessor for those seeking lost objects.
