Saints Who Studied Law

Blessed Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi

Married layman († 1951) Feast: November 25

Luigi was born in Catania, Italy, and grew up in a large, loving family. When one of his uncles and his wife remained childless after several years, Luigi agreed to be adopted by them, although he always remained close to his parents. When he grew up, he studied law in Rome, obtained his degree, and began working in finance law.

Luigi met Maria Corsini (also honored as a blessed) through family connections, and they married soon afterward. Maria’s personal devotion began to rub off on Luigi, particularly after he became a father. During her pregnancy with their fourth child, the doctor told Luigi that his wife’s life was in grave danger and encouraged them to have an abortion. Maria and Luigi refused. By God’s grace, both baby and mother survived.

Luigi held many prominent positions in banks and the government throughout his life, but he remained a devoted family man. He and Maria became leaders of the scouting movement, organized pilgrimages to Lourdes, and founded Catholic Action in Italy. They participated in these groups and other charitable acts of service as a close-knit family. When their four children grew up, one became a priest, one became a nun, one became a monk, and one has been declared a Venerable Servant of God.

Heavenly Father, teach us to make our families
into domestic churches.
