Saints Who Performed Great Miracles

Saint Rumwold

Infant († 662)Feast: November 3

Saint Rumwold (or Rumbold) lived in 7th-century England. He died very young, and little is known for certain about his life, but a Vita written several centuries later records a marvelous tale of infant faith. According to this source, Rumwold lived just three days, during which time he was gifted with speech, infused knowledge, and prophecy.

“Christianus sum, Christianus sum, Christianus sum,” the newborn said in Latin (in English, “I am a Christian”). “I worship God the three in one,” he continued. “I confess and adore the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Then he requested the sacraments. Though far from a church, priests were able to find and miraculously transport a giant stone, which served as a baptismal font. Baby Rumwold then preached a sermon on the Trinity, and at last, foretold his own imminent death. He gave instructions for his burial, including the transfer of his relics to their final resting place.

Devotion to Saint Rumwold flourished in the Middle Ages. Pilgrims flocked to Buckingham to seek his aid. And as the Vita concludes: “There and in many places, when invoked, Saint Rumwold bestows favors upon those who ask, giving sight to the blind, making the lame to walk, and granting deliverance to the sick.”

Almighty Father, help us to recognize the miracles
you work through the gift of children.
