Why will there be a new edition of the Bible?
The new edition of the Bible—officially referred to as the Catholic American Bible (CAB)—has been developed to establish a unified text approved for all uses, including proclamation at Mass, praying the Liturgy of the Hours, catechesis, and for private prayer and study.
Who has approved this new Catholic American Bible
All texts have been approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) and the International Committee on English in the Liturgy (ICEL).
What is new about the Catholic American Bible (CAB)
The CAB will include a brand-new translation of the New Testament, the updated translation of the Old Testament as contained in the New American Bible Revised Edition (NABRE), and the translations found in the Abbey Psalms and Canticles. In addition to the revisions to the New and Old Testaments and the inclusion of the Abbey Psalms and Canticles, it includes new appendices as well as updated introductions and notes.
Why do we need a new translation of the New Testament?
As has already been completed for the Old Testament, this new translation is more accurate and closer to the intent of the original Greek, it provides consistency for use in the liturgy, while retaining the reverence deserved by the Word of God. It combines the accuracy of a literal word-for-word translation with the beautiful cadence that arises from a thought-to-thought translation.
What does consistency with the liturgy mean?
Since this new translation will soon be incorporated into the Liturgy of the Hours and Lectionary for Mass, what the faithful read at home and hear at Mass will be the same.
When will the Catholic American Bible (CAB) be approved for use in place of the New American Bible, Revised Edition (NABRE)?
The CAB is anticipated to be available for private study and devotion beginning February 10, 2027 (Ash Wednesday), as per indication by the USCCB. Its implementation into the liturgy has yet to be announced.
Can I still use the Bible I currently own?
The USCCB approves the use of the 1970 NAB and its subsequent revisions as well as any Bible that carries an imprimatur (approval from the Catholic Church). They will remain approved translations for personal prayer and study but they are ultimately intended to be replaced by the new translation (CAB) for all liturgical purposes, so this is an excellent opportunity to consider purchasing a new edition for yourself as well as a gift for family member and a friend.
What occasions are appropriate for giving a Bible as a gift?
There are many occasions for which a Bible can be given as a gift. Weddings, Confirmations, Baptisms, First Holy Communions, retirements, etc. are some typical occasions. Welcoming a convert into the Church is also an excellent occasion to gift a Bible.
